Viva Palestina Enters Gaza

From Eirigi.Org: There were jubilant scenes in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday night [January 6] as the Viva Palestina international aid convoy finally crossed into the Palestinian city of Rafah after spending over a moth on the road.

There was universal relief among the 500 convoy members that they had reached their destination, especially in light of a brutal attack on participants by Egyptian riot police the previous evening.

That night [January 5], around 2,000 riot police attacked the compound where the Viva Palestina vehicles and participants were situated, after the Egyptian negotiator walked away from talks with convoy leaders on their journey through the country and into Rafah.

The riot police also used water cannons and tear gas, as well as throwing rocks and stones, and were joined by local thugs in their attack. As things calmed down, dozens of convoy members had been injured and another dozen had been arrested.

The following morning though they got into their vehicles and finally left Al-Arish for the 40-mile journey to the Gaza Strip. As part of the negotiations Egypt refused to allow 59 of the vehicles, a quarter of the entire convoy, to travel. Egyptian authorities had hoped to hand the vehicles over to the Israeli state, but instead they will be driven back to Syria and Lebanon, and will be donated to the local Palestinian refugee camps.

The convoy was due to arrive in Gaza on December 27, the first anniversary of the assault launched by Israeli forces on the Gaza Strip that left over 1,400 people dead. As Viva Palestina members and Palestinians remembered that assault, Israeli TV was reporting that its military was drilling in the Negev desert in preparation for another offensive against Gaza.

PFLP: Arab and international pressure to return to negotiations plays into the hands of the Zionist enemy

Comrade Jamil Mizher, member of the Central Committee of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, called for a total rejection of Arab and international pressure to return to negotiations, saying that such negotiations only play into the hands of the Zionist enemy.

Comrade Mizher, speaking with Aljazeera.net on January 4, 2009, said that a return to the futile and harmful negotiations that even the Palestinian Authority leadership itself have recognized are unsuccessful would only serve Israeli interests. He said further that relying on the U.S. administration, which is fully aligned with the occupation, is betting on mirage and illusion. Comrade Mizher called upon Arab countries to support restoration of Palestinian national unity and put pressure on the occupation, not pressure Palestinians to serve the interests of Israel.

I totally agree with Comrade Mizher on this statement. Negotation with the Zionist enemy is unthinkable while they continue to build illegal settlements, kill Palestinian civilians and deny the basic rights of the people.
Long live the Intifada

Sinn Féin Ard Chom. Meeting Postponed

The Sinn Fein national executive meeting in Dublin on Saturday has been postponed due to the bad weather.

Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams said the Ard Chomhairle was to discuss "the growing crisis in the political process".

He said it was temporarily postponed as "given the seriousness of what we have to discuss it is imperative that we have the fullest attendance".

"We are totally dissatisfied with the approach taken by the DUP and this has continued in recent days," he said.

"Their return to business as usual is just that

Slan Abhaile, Peter!

Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson is coming under increased political pressure over allegations about his wife's financial affairs.

A BBC programme asked why the DUP leader did not tell the authorities his wife had not registered £50,000 she obtained from two property developers.

Iris Robinson used the money to help her young lover start a business.

Mr Robinson said he will "resolutely defend" attacks on his character and "contest any allegation of wrongdoing".

He is to speak to the media later on Friday

I believe now Peter Robinsons position is surely untenable. The testimony of former friend Selwyn Black is surely enough to prove that neither Peter or his wife are financially reliable or competent enough to continue to run the Stormont Administration.
The next step needs to be a free vote of confidence on his leadership, one which he will lose and a new election held for the Assembley. I hope now the former Ulster Resistance Commander's career in politics is over and that he and the hypocrite homophobe Iris will never grace our screens again.

SLA Troops In Execution Video

Sri Lanka has angrily rejected UN claims that footage which apparently shows extra-judicial killings by Sri Lankan troops is genuine.

The government described a UN inquiry into the video's authenticity as "highly subjective and biased". It says the footage was "fabricated".

UN human rights investigator Philip Alston earlier said three independent experts confirmed it was authentic.

The video shows a man dressed as a soldier shooting a man in the head.

The footage was allegedly filmed in January during the final stages of Sri Lanka's bloody war with Tamil Tiger rebels.

After a man in army uniform shoots a naked, bound and blindfolded man in the back of the head, the video shows the bodies of eight others in a field nearby.

Mr Alston has called for a war crimes investigation

Not surprising that these allegations have surfaced, it has been well known for some time that Sri Lankan soldiers have been using tactics such as this and the commanders all have blood on their hands.
Let us hope that action against these vile people is swift
